After “Orpheus” dropped last April with support by chief musical dispensers like Ben Sims, Call Super, Loraine James, Carista, Ben UFO, Danielle, Optimo’s JD Twitch, Nazira, Erol Alkan and more, the second outing of this new, revitalised One Eyed Jacks is yet another Photonz single leading up to the release of his forthcoming album “Communal Sweat” dropping later this year also on the label. On “The Sun And The Moon”, OEJ label-head Photonz shows his lighter side, with sun-tinged piano hooks alternating nocturnal sentimentality, pointillist bleeps and a stripped-back snappy house beat with no extra adorn or distractions. On “White Pelican”, the second original on this single, things get a bit more abstract and intricate with angular and dialoguing grooves and sounds, laid out and organised in a live arrangement and cooked up for late sets and trippier electro-techno fantasies.

On remix services we’ve got two up-and-coming greats from Portugal and France: Lisbon-based Brazilian dj, producer and activist Cigarra steps in to transform the title-track into a fast-paced, footwork-modelled bass attack while retaining the original’s summery appeal; Parisian well-kept secret and Photonz occasional collaborator Keumel instead turns “The Sun And The Moon” into an elegant, patiently-passed acid/deep house hybrid, focusing more on its melancholy and emotive flair, and bringing it home with a dub-techno sensibility on the FX. Artwork is once again by Príncipe-affiliated and FLUR Records record pusher Márcio Matos, responsible for the visual identity of the label since day one. Mastering by Justin Drake of Peace Division.
